The Today show is this week celebrating its 35th birthday, celebrating with a week-long trip around Australia that kick off in the Whitsundays on Monday 26 June. A little over a year since the entire show was broadcast from the foreshore of Airlie Beach, the popular morning show returned to live broadcast from Hamilton Island in celebration of 35 years on the air.
As part of their We Love Australia trip celebrating their milestone, the Today show is travelling down the Australian coast for the week and will finish up with a massive party at Channel Nine studios on Friday June 30. All the morning favourites are in tow including hosts Karl Stefanovic and Lisa Wilkinson as well as news reporter Sylvia Jeffries, sports presenter Tim Gilbert and entertainment news icon Richard Wilkins.
The first show as part of the week-long celebration featured a special program that showcased the Great Barrier Reef. Broadcasting from Hamilton Island in the picturesque Whitsundays, Sylvia went diving on Hardy Reef to see how scientists are preserving the natural wonder for future generations. The Today team also checked in with locals to see how the region had bounced back since Cyclone Debbie.
"This really will be a very special week for all of us here at Today,” co-host Lisa Wilkinson said.
"Apart from beginning the week in the stunning Whitsundays - and travelling around this beautiful country of ours - we'll get to celebrate our 35th birthday with all the amazing people who have helped to make this the wonderful program it is today. It promises to be an extraordinary week for our viewers” she said.
"This is pure Australia. Reef, Outback, Ned Kelly, lethal animals. I love this country, ” Karl Stefanovic said.
